Community-Led Monitoring for Malaria in Lukulu District

A combined team from Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign (TALC), Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) and Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) recently conducted a monitoring visit to Lukulu District as part of the ongoing Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) for Malaria initiative.

During the visit, the team paid a courtesy call to the District Health Office (DHO) where they met with the District Health Director Katota Lufunda, the Malaria Elimination Officer Matongo Benedict, and the Community Engagement Officer Lydia Kayoya. The meeting took place on Tuesday, 3rd March 2026, and focused on reviewing progress made in implementing the CLM-Malaria action plan that was developed during the Quarter 4 District Dialogue Meeting in 2025.

The purpose of the visit was to follow up on key gaps and challenges identified during the district dialogue meeting and to assess the progress made in addressing them. The team engaged with district health leadership and program officers to understand how the action plans are being implemented, the current status of activities, and the outcomes achieved so far.

A key focus of the discussion was how malaria-related data is being utilized across different levels of the health system. The team explored whether data collected through community-led monitoring mechanisms is being effectively disseminated and integrated into district and provincial planning processes, ensuring that evidence informs decision-making and program improvements.

The monitoring visit also emphasized the importance of documentation and accountability. District officials were encouraged to maintain and share relevant documentation, including reports, meeting minutes, and other records, to demonstrate progress in implementing the agreed action plans.

This engagement provided an important platform for strengthening collaboration between civil society organizations and the district health leadership. Through continued dialogue, monitoring, and evidence-based planning, partners aim to improve the implementation of malaria interventions and address community-identified challenges in Western Province.

The visit forms part of the broader CLM-Malaria project, which seeks to empower communities, strengthen accountability in health systems, and support Zambia’s efforts toward malaria elimination.
